Wednesday of the Third Week

Reflection

Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. Mt 5: 17-19

This verse feels highly relevant to the times we are living in.  Many of us are watching and wondering as some of our most foundational principles seem to be shifting all around us.  But I take comfort in these words that Jesus spoke to His disciples in Matthew today—- some things will not change, do not change.  The most basic of God’s commandments, given to us by Moses and reinforced in Jesus,  will always be our touchstone.  We put God first in all things. We honor Him and spend time in prayer and contemplation each week. We respect and honor each other in our words and our actions.

In living God’s commandments—both the laws of the Old Testament and the key addition of the New—to love our neighbor as Jesus loved us-  not only are we assured the heavenly reward of everlasting life, but we create the Kingdom of Heaven right here on Earth!  When we respect God and each other we enrich our daily experiences and relationships.  In keeping and teaching God’s laws in our daily life, we are building the great nation of peace,  justice, and wisdom so many of us are seeking right now.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to keep Your laws alive and actionable in my thoughts and in my words today and every day. Amen.
