Friday of the Third Week

Reflection
“Return, O Israel, to the Lord, your God.” These are not the words from the mouth of an angry parent, making you cringe at the potential consequences hidden within the intonation. No, it is a reminder of God’s ever-presence in our lives, even when we have turned away. He is always waiting for us to return. It is a call to experience God’s love, which is the overwhelming theme of today’s readings. God loves each of us fully and perfectly, and His greatest commandments are to love Him above all else and to love our neighbors as a sign of God’s light within us. It reminds me of the line in the hymn, Here I Am, Lord: “I will break their hearts of stone/Give them hearts for love alone.” Imagine the fragility of a heart made only for love, but also the unspeakable joy. Lent is a time for prayer and self-reflection, but it can also be a time to reconnect with living out our faith. We were made by a God who loves unconditionally, and as thanks for that gift, we can share that heavenly love among our neighbors, our classmates and colleagues, our community. Sometimes that is hard, but each day we are given a new chance to choose love.

Prayer
Gracious Lord, thank You for the gift of Your love. Please help me to choose love in all that I do today.
