Thursday of the First Week

Reflection

The Gospel today says “ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find.” For those who attend Mass here at the college, these words are in a familiar song that the liturgical choir sings, Seek Ye First. The words are urging us to seek God, and seek the many gifts that God provides us. God wants to help us, for God is always with us. In the first reading, the same theme appears as Queen Esther is seized by mortal anguish and pleads to God for help. I think we sometimes get so caught up in our struggles that we forget God is there for us and is fighting with us. We just have to ask Him to support us.

What struggles might you be having right now that you could ask God to support you with? We sometimes think that in order to grow, we must push forward on our own, fight our own battles. That is not the case with God, as He wants to be with us every step of the way. I am reminded of the poem, Footprints in the Sand, which says “when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.” God seeks to be in relationship with us, to be with us each and every day, but He won’t force us.  He waits until we are ready for Him.

Prayer

Lord, help us to call to You, to seek and ask for You. May we grow closer to You during this season, and find comfort in Your presence. Draw us closer to You in our time of need, hold us close and give us the strength to keep going through this beautiful world You created.
