Tuesday of the First Week

Reflection

As we continue in the first full week of Lent, today’s readings remind us of the consolation and sustenance provided by God, who knows our needs before we mention them.

In recent pandemic times, despite the array of challenges that we have all faced, we have an unwavering advocate in the Lord who remains “…close to the brokenhearted; and those crushed in spirit He saves.” If we listen and make room for His Word to grow, then our lives can bear fruit abundantly. We are nurtured and transformed by His Word, like the parched earth saturated with essential nutrients by the snow and rain.

Matthew’s Gospel reading offers instruction on meaningful, heart-felt prayer. As we pray, it is important to not merely repeat words, but to listen and allow God’s Word to take root in our lives. As we attentively offer the Lord’s Prayer, our hearts can be filled with praise, gratitude, and forgiveness.

Today is the memorial feast of John of God, sixteenth century Portuguese saint who devoted his life to serving the sick, established a hospital in Spain, and founded the Brothers Hospitallers order, dedicated to caring for the ill and afflicted. May we steadfastly pray for those suffering among us and their caregivers and assist whenever the opportunity arises.

Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for our daily bread that sustains us to serve in our communities and Your Kingdom. Increase our love and compassion for those we encounter each day, especially those in need. We ask this through our most compassionate Lord Jesus Christ. Saint John of God, pray for us!
