Thursday of the Fourth Week
Reflection
In today’s Old Testament reading, God directs Moses to reprimand His people who have fashioned an icon in the form of a calf and are worshipping it in place of the True God that led them out of the desert. We know that this directive was heeded and the rest, as they say, is history. In our studies, travel, reading and TV/Internet use, we encounter gods like this golden calf that were once important in the minds of people but now are mere curiosities. Some scholars say that if God did not exist, one would need to be created to maintain and validate social order. Created gods are subject to the winds of political change — “god today, gone tomorrow.”
What about our God? Our God is the real thing. We don’t have to create a god – ours just is. We can understand the age-old search for something more than us. We have found it – the True God that others have been searching for from the beginning of time. The True God does not have to be subject to our limited thinking process or human references. Something so superior to our human form is really impossible to comprehend. That is why Jesus was given to us to bridge the gap and point us in the right direction.
Prayer
Lord, help us to accept what we can and strive to understand more. Let the life of Jesus lead the way to our understanding.
