Fifth Sunday of Lent

Reflection

The encounter of the woman caught in adulatory and Jesus sums up the ideal Lenten experience.  Acknowledging and confronting our sins, we stand before Jesus.  He doesn’t condemn us; rather He encourages us to go forth and live and to be free of sin.

Jesus encourages us to focus not on the sins of the past, but to live in the present and look toward the future with peace of mind.  Our Lenten journey is always about being with Jesus and looking forward to His resurrection.

We can always carry around the regrets of the past or be with people who remind of past sins.  This distracts us from the worth that God has created in each human person.  Jesus’ words are so freeing: I do not condemn you! Go, and sin no more!  She is a child of God, meant to live joyfully, with healthy relationships, forgiven by the work of Jesus.  We can all experience this encounter in the sacrament of reconciliation: I absolve you from your sin.  Go in peace!

Prayer

Lord,  we come to You aware of our sins, yet even more aware of Your mercy.  Give us the grace to live in Your peace and look forward to greater holiness and peace each day.  Amen.
